2011 was the sesquicentennial of The American Civil War Years and Living History is our passport back through time. Here, in the State of Michigan, we are extremely proud of all of the men and women who help keep our history alive. We must not permit time to erode the events of the past from our memories. Both heroism and tragedy are part of our collective culture and have served as the foundation for what we have become as a nation and a state. Living History helps strengthen our ties to our ancestors and allows us to revel in the triumphs and successes of those who gave so much in the name of patriotism. It was because brave men and women of all races and ethnicities chose to sacrifice their lives for each other and to answer the call of their country, that we are all free people, in one nation, under one flag, united. The Michigan Experience: American Jazz Greats
Jazz is an original American art form. It is a national treasure. Jazz is patriotic. It's a music about freedom and there is a surprising list of jazz musicians who have been in the military that fights to keep us free. Six Michigan band leaders come together to pay tribute to those American citizens who proudly served their country while honing their skills and who later contributed significantly to the culture.The Peaceful Warriors Band is led by Vietnam Veteran Allan Barnes on sax and five band leaders Rayse Biggs, trumpet -- Cliff Monear, Piano -- Gayelynn McKinney, drums -- Nick Calandro, bass and Sunny Wilkinson, vocals. Peaceful Warriors is the name of the tune that Billy Taylor wrote in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. The Peaceful Warriors plays jazz standards associated with jazz greats who served in the military like John Coltrane who was in the Navy; Dave Brubeck -- Army; Donald Byrd -- Air Force; Tony Bennett -- Army; and Percy Heath -- Tuskegee Airman. There is also a musical tribute to the men and women who performed for numerous USO events.
